French supporters very welcome, we also recruit other nationals for the occasion ;-) In any case, bring yourself, your smile, your flag! |

It's wine tasting with a difference, - you purchase a wine tasting card, then load on as much money as you wish, which you can then use in the wine tasting machine. It gives out 3 measures so you can try as much or as little as you like, if you have money left on the card it can be used at another time. There are also cheese boards, cheese & meat boards, bread & oil and olives, if anyone wishes to have some food while wine tasting. |

Description: |
Opened in 1939, the shelters were the largest purpose-built civilian air raid shelters in the country designed to provide shelter for up to 6,500 people. This labyrinth of tunnels under part of the town centre provided shelter, and a way of life for families from in and around Stockport through the dark days of the Blitz. Carved into the natural sandstone cliffs, the intriguing network of underground tunnels offer visitors an unparalleled insight into life in wartime Britain in the 1940s. We'll be going on an Explorer Tour just for MAD Walkers, visiting parts of the tunnel not accessible in the daytime and covering over half of the length of the tunnels, as opposed to around a quarter on the standard tours. Worth bringing a torch and an extra layer, as it does of course get chilly down there. No doubt we'll pop round to the pub The Crown afterwards, which is a few hundred yards away, for a pint and to spin tall tales of subterranean survival against the odds! |
|
Booking: |
As we need a minimum of 15 people confirmed on the tour for it to go ahead, e-mail secretary@madwalkers.org.uk to register your interest and receive details on how to pay the £7.50 entry fee. |
|
Venue/Time: |
7pm at Stockport Air Raid Shelters, 61 Chestergate, Stockport SK1 1NE. This is about a 10-minute walk (mostly downhill) from Stockport train station. For anyone familiar with Stockport Plaza, to get from the Plaza to the Air Raid Shelters, walk 300 yards away from the A6. Note that at 7:10 we will be inside with the doors locked behind us by our tour guide who will be the only member of staff on site. So please be on time |

If you haven’t been to the Plaza then visiting this beautifully restored Grade II listed building is another good reason to come along - it is a really lovely place to watch a film. And if you are the first to see Edwina Currie (she was there last time!) I will buy you an ice cream. We can go to The Crown pub after the film. |

Huddersfield to Marsden – 17:45 - 17:57 Marsden: Riverhead Brewery Tap The Riverhead brew-pub opened in 1995, with Ossett Brewery purchasing the site in 2006. The core range of beers are named after local reservoirs, with the height of the reservoir relating to the strength of the beer. Greenfield to Stalybridge – 20:36 - 20:45 Stalybridge: Buffet Bar Dating from 1885, the unique and famous Victorian buffet bar on the platform has retained its original marble-topped bar, back fittings and welcoming fire. I've had some interest from a few members of the group regarding the Blackpool Air Show. Having attended last year I plan to make a repeat visit. According to their website, the action begins with the Eurofighter Typhoon at 13:33 and finishes when the Red Arrows fly off into the distance at 16:20. The website shows a varied programme including the Breitling Wingwalkers, Chinook helicopter, Battle of Britain fighters (namely the Spitfire and Hurricane), the Douglas Dakota transporter, as well as smaller aerobatic machines. The Vulcan is also listed to display. An experienced pilot provides a commentary throughout, the sea and sky provide a great backdrop to the action. Dress appropriately for the weather, usual food, drink etc. There is scope for people to do what they want to do afterwards - trains back to Manchester are 16:44, 17:44, 18:40, 19:44, 20:42. |
