No Tigers, No Lions Part1: Lit & Sad

Public Transport based walk with Stephen Smith.

10.5 mi

520m

Part 1 of a 29 mile, 3 part stroll* this is not quite the standard route from Littlebrough to Marsden (marked as the station to station walk on some maps) but it mostly is. Ground conditions on the uphill stretch are, for the most part, pebbles and slightly crushed stone and it's only on the downhill stretch through Willmer/Willykay Cloughs that conditions are at all tricky.

We cross the M62 near Hollingworth Lake, head off to Piethorne, cross the A640 and the Pennine Way on the county boundary and then canter down to our first destination in Marsden.

A couple of house-keeping points:
1. The timing should allow us to get to Marsden station just in time for the train's departure back to Manchester at 12.28, but if planning on just doing part 1, you'd be advised to play safe and assume on catching the 13.28 back into Manchester.

2. I'm planning on starting part 2 of the walk shortly before 13.00, to allow time for a refreshment top-up in the Marsden shops and a lunch break a tad longer than the 3 minutes customarily allocated.

3. If you're only doing Part 1, this is not a walk to be got to by car - if planning on going onto Phases 2 and perhaps 3, then it's more practical and all 3 stations (Littleborough, Sowerby Bridge and Hebden Bridge) have parking facilities

*the word stroll should not be mistaken for saunter, meander, drift or other epithets for slower walking - we'll have to maintain a brisk pace throughout to reach Marsden in time for the next phase.

Meet & Travel arrangements - Public Transport

We’ll use public transport from Manchester to travel to and return from the walk start/end.
Itinerary is below - click station links for map and further information.

07:50: Meet at Manchester Victoria for the train at 07:56. You will need to purchase a ticket prior to meeting.

Suggested ticket:

If only doing phase 1, a rail ranger ticket (£5.40), and a Marsden to Greenfield single (£6) may be your best bet.

If doing the phases 1&2 or even, foolishly, all 3 phases, then a Manchester-Sowerby Bridge return (£10.60) or Manchester-Hebden Bridge return (£9.60) respectively are probably best value.

07:56: Train departs for the walk start at Littleborough train Station.

08:25: Walk starts at Littleborough train Station.

Return from Marsden Station. Trains departing at 12.28 or 13.28

Waypoints: Higher Booth, Cold Greave, Readycon Dean Reservoir, Willykay Clough, Marsden
