Public Transport based walk with Lee Hesselden and Stephen Jones.
Departing the station and heading away from the Navigation Tavern we cross the River Calder before weaving our way between the houses to begin the longest ascent of the day through Whitley Wood. It’s then onto Whitley Reservoir where we reach our first pub of the day, The Woolpack Inn (though this will likely be closed).
Continuing our way towards Dewsbury we literally pass through Briestfield’s Horstead Farm riding school and the wonderfully named Timmins Shrogg. With the National Coal Mining Museum in the periphery we sadly bypass the Shoulder of Mutton pub and continue our ramble to Emroyd Common. Leaving the rural part of the day behind us, we head through the outer suburbs of Dewsbury onto the Kirklees Way, with the Saville Arms in the background we make a brief stop to admire the ruins of the Hall in Thornhill Rectory Park.
Crossing the Calder and Hebble Navigation we continue along the Kirklees Way before picking up the Ossett to Dewsbury Greenway through a disused railway tunnel into the centre of Dewsbury for a well earned drink at the West Riding Refreshment Rooms.
If you feel cheated by us missing the plethora of pubs during the day join us for a journey along our version of the rail ale trail back to Manchester.
