Public Transport based walk with Sarah Peppiatt.

21.0 mi

For anyone who's ever been tempted to try the long walks, but was worried they might get left in the countryside! This is a longish walk with a lot of ascent, but with 3 bailout points!  It runs for 21 miles through the stunning and varied country round Hope and Grindleford, including Bretton Clough, the River Derwent and Surprise View

Meet & Travel arrangements - Public Transport

We’ll use public transport from Manchester to travel to and return from the walk start/end.
Itinerary is below - click station links for map and further information.

08:30: Meet at Manchester Piccadilly for the train at 08:45. You will need to purchase a ticket prior to meeting.

Suggested ticket:

Depends on how far you think you'll get round and where you're coming from! If you're confident of doing the whole thing, then return to Bamford (£10.60). If you're likely to want to bail out (or are travelling in from across Manchester) an £11 Wayfarer is best bet (buy in advance from stations or paypoint). The Wayfarer will cover for buses as well.

08:45: Train departs for the walk start at Hope Rail Station.

09:40: Walk starts at Hope Rail Station.

Return from Bamford Station. X: 35, (aiming for 18:35) until 19:35 then 20:57

Waypoints: Brough; Bretton Clough; Eyam; River Derwent; Hey Wood; Grindleford station; Surprise View; Scraperlow; Hathersage station; River Derwent; Abney Clough; Offerton Moor; River Derwent; Bamford Station

Extra Note:

Bailout points at Eyam (roughly 6 miles in: intermittent buses to Grindleford); Grindleford (roughly 10 miles in: hourly trains to Manchester); and Hathersage (roughly 15 miles in, hourly trains to Manchester).

You will need to be able to keep up with the pace of the group even if you're intending to bail out early (about 3 mph/5 kph).

If you've not done a long walk before bring plenty of food and water: you'll be surprised how much you get through!

Possible to drive to either Hope and get train back from Bamford at the end, or drive to Bamford and get 8:36 train to Hope. More parking at Hope.
