Two Walks in North Wales

Car based walk with Tom Parish.

12.5 mi

950m

Walk 1

9km circular walk from Sygun Copper Mine (2.5 hours drive from Manchester), starting with a stroll down into Beddgelert, then along the granite riverside path to Pont Aberglaslyn, before approx 400m total ascent in a steady uphill walk over sheltered grassland, then a steep descent to Llyn Dinas on a loose gravel path, then an easy walk on tarmac back down to Sygun.  Total time is 4 hours, with a stop for lunch at the top.  The views across to Snowdon from the top are stunning, and bad weather won't spoil that, but it might spoil lunch.

Walk 2

8-12km circular walk (variable, depends on timing) from Llanferes to take in Moel Famau and more fantastic panoramic views of the Vale of Clwyd.  500m total steady ascent, on wide, well-maintained footpaths, with the circular descent taking in parts of Offa's Dyke Path.  If time is short, or weather is bad, this can be shortened, or even dropped to a 4km (1.5hr) moderate linear walk/climb up from the car park at the base of Moel Famau and back.  From there, it's just over an hour's drive back to Manchester.  There are a couple of nice ale pubs to stop at on the way back to Ruthin.

Car based walk, graded strenuous.  Although each stage is not too heavy going, there are two fairly big hill climbs, and it will need to be at a fairly quick pace to do both in one day.  Sturdy waterproof boots essential for the first walk as the climb from Pont Aberglaslyn can be boggy and the descent path is rough.  The second walk is along gritty bridleways so walking trainers would be fine.

Please contact Tom Parish (MADW@baldmosher.com) in advance for more details about the meetup, as car transport will try to be arranged in advance.
