Welsh Wander

Direct Transport based walk with Sarah Peppiatt.

A long circuit out in the Welsh borders, heading out  past Chirk Castle before swinging round through the woods and valleys to pick up the Offa's Dyke Trail towards Oswestry where we turn north along Wat's Dyke Path before a final stroll down the canal back to Chirk. It'll be a full day, but well worth it for an amazing walk in an area the group doesn't visit much.

Meet & Travel arrangements - Direct

This is a walk with direct transport arrangements, meeting at the walk start.

08:50: Meet at the walk start (Chirk station)

08:50 Walk starts.

Waypoints: Chirk Castle, Pontfadog, Offa's Dyke, Brogyntyn Park, Old Oswestry Fort, Wat's Dyke, Chirk

Extra Note:

Direct transport but possible to do by public transport with an early start: 06:50 train from Manchester Picc (leader joining train at Warrington Bank Quay) and change at Chester for 08:19 train to Chirk. £25.30. Aiming to finish in time for the 18:47 train back to Chester.

If you're driving please be considerate about parking. Meet point is the station but they won't appreciate us filling up the train station car park. There is a decent public car park about 1/4 mile away in the village centre.

Possible to bail out 17 miles in at Gobowen and get train back to Chirk (hourly trains). However you'll still need to be able to keep up with the pace of the group if you're intending to use this.

Paths were wet and muddy on recce and there were a couple of streams to ford so you will need proper waterproof footwear with you. As usual suitable quantities of food/fluid bearing in mind this will be a long day
