Scramble No 2: Wildboar Clough, Bleaklow

Public Transport based scramble with Tom Whitehead.

12.2 mi

This walk involves a scramble up Wildboar Clough at the beginning of the walk and thus is not suitable for new or inexperienced hikers. Scrambling experience, whilst not essential, is advisable. The walk leader reserves the right to change the route should the weather consist of anything more than drizzle.

The scramble up Wildboar Clough to Bleaklow is an excellent scramble. It is vital that you are either an reasonably experienced hiker or have scrambled before (such as on my walk of 1 April). Challenging but fun, it involves frequent use of hands for scrambling up or around a series of small waterfalls. Good quality waterproof gloves are thus essential.

The scramble also involves bolder-hopping in a shallow stream and so good quality hiking boots are vital. The scramble is not exposed but does involve some moderate heights. At all points there are reasonably straightforward ways of avoiding the hardest scrambles.

The scramble should be within the limits of any reasonably experiened hiker, but please discuss with the walk leader via if you are unsure. In particular no experience of climbing is needed and no ropes are used.

Prior to the scramble we enjoy a stroll along the Londendale Trail. After the scramble we wander to Bleaklow Head before visiting the famous Bomber crash site. We decend to Glossop via the Doctor's Gate path.

I wish I could say there are excellent views, but Bleaklow's appeal is widely accepted to not include its views.
