The Road to Wigan's Pies

Public Transport based walk suitable for new walkers, with John Ireland.

Previously known as 'Why not put your pie in a barm?', this is a linear walk into Wigan from Appley Bridge taking in climbing up to Ashurst's Beacon and then heading for the Canal to take in Wigan Pier before ending up outside a pie shop in Wigan Town Centre.

Meet & Travel arrangements - Public Transport

We’ll use public transport from Manchester to travel to and return from the walk start/end.
Itinerary is below - click station links for map and further information.

09:00: Meet at Manchester Piccadilly for the train at 09:22. You will need to purchase a ticket prior to meeting.

Suggested ticket:

Return to Appley Bridge £5.40

09:22: Train departs for the walk start at Appley Bridge Train Station.

10:15: Walk starts at Appley Bridge Train Station.

Return from Wigan Wallgate. TBC

Waypoints: Douglas Bank Farm, Ashurst's Beacon, Walthew Green, Gathurst, Leeds & Liverpool Canal, Wigan Pier


No toilets at Appley Bridge Station, use the ones on the train.

Lunch on Ashurst's beacon, then pub stop at the nearby Prince William.

Optional Pies at various shops in Wigan, before retiring to the Wigan Central Real Ale and Cider Bar for further refreshments.

Some muddy bits in the woods just before Gathurst, so gaiters advisable if it has been raining.
