A Teddy Bear is optional

Public Transport based walk with Stephen Smith.

15.0 mi

When I recce'd this walk, I encountered a teddy bear's picnic, swimmers swimming atop a hill, and bracken that reached my head. Alas, the changing of the seasons means that a repeat of any of these is unlikely, though feel free to bring swiming kit or a teddy bear if you wish to recreate the first two.

This stroll seems to involve a lot of climbing. 5 hills that your legs, heart and lungs will notice, and the odd other trivial one as well. 2 small hills to get to Walsden, a third gets us up to to the edge of the moor which Stoodley Pike is on and  - sticking to the edge of the moor with the valley always in sight - a short hop later we'll be able to climb the monument (this is optional and not counted within the precisely calculated ascent)

Then a drop off the hill, climb up Jumble Hole Clough to Blackshaw Head and then a walk down to see the mill ponds and chimney's that litter the base of the Colden Valley. Then the final climb up to the village of Heptonstall and back down again to Hebden.

NB1. Walk leader meeting at walk start

NB2. We don't pass any toilet facilities, including at Todmorden station, so please use those on the train

NB3. There is a bail out point a shade before the 4th mile when we pass Walsden station; and at the 10 mile mark when we cross the canal and are an easy couple of miles walk back to Hebden station (or a mile to the nearest pub). If you take this option you'll do about 12 miles and about 300m less ascent.
