Limestone Dales

Public Transport based walk with Sarah Peppiatt.

22.0 mi

A long  but very pretty walk intended mainly as a training walk for those contemplating the Mid Summer Challenge Walk in June. However the walk is open to anybody as long as you're up for the distance!

Meet & Travel arrangements - Public Transport

We’ll use public transport from Manchester to travel to and return from the walk start/end.
Itinerary is below - click station links for map and further information.

08:30: Meet at Manchester Piccadilly for the train at 08:45. You will need to purchase a ticket prior to meeting.

Suggested ticket:

Either return to Grindleford £10.10 or a Wayfarer ticket (£10 - must be purchased in advance from travelshop or manned station). The Wayfarer can also be used on buses from Tideswell should you wish to cut the walk short - see extra information below.

08:45: Train departs for the walk start at Grindleford Station.

09:45: Walk starts at Grindleford Station.

Return from Hope Rail Station. hourly at xx:39 until 21:00

Waypoints: Grindleford; Froggat Bridge; Stoney Middleton; Rough Side; Great Longstone; Ashford in the Water; Monsal Dale; Cressbrook Dale; Tideswell Dale; Tideswell; Little Hucklow; Bradwell; Brough; Hope

Extra info:

This is a long walk  with very few bail out points before Tideswell and needs to be done at a brisk pace. Please be sure you're capable of completing the walk.

It is possible to leave the walk at Tideswell (making it a 16 mile walk), but you will need to be able to walk at the pace of the main group.

Travel arrangements from Tideswell are as follows:

Hourly buses at X:23 to Buxton (trains back from Buxton to Manchester every hour at X:27). Last bus from Tideswell to Buxton 18:28.

Occasional buses from Tideswell to Grindleford (short walk to station then required - trains from Grindleford hourly at X:28) at 16:28 and 19:22.

A Wayfarer ticket will cover all this, so if you're not sure you want to do the entire route you'd do better to buy a Wayfarer ticket;

If driving, you can either park at Hope or Grindleford and then catch the train back to the other station at the end of the walk.
