Sunday 2nd April 2017: Martin Mere birdwatching and cakes

Katy Nolan and Anthony Helm

I know it is a bit short notice but we're planning a day trip to Martin Mere Wetland Centre and would be delighted if anyone would like to join us!

The train leaves Manchester Piccadilly 10.31 am (direction Southport) and arrives at Burscough Bridge at 11.30.

We will be getting on the train at Gathurst at 11.18am.

There is a well-signposted two mile trail from Burscough Bridge railway station platform along local footpaths. We expect to arrive at Martin Mere at 12.15. If you wish to drive there directly, the address is Fish Lane, Burscough, Lancashire, L40 0TA and there is plenty of free parking available. There is also free parking at Burscough Bridge railway station.

Martin Mere has a lovely café with many types of cake on offer! There is also a boat tour, canoe safari, otter feeding and flamingoes.

Return trains from Burscough are hourly. We expect to take the return train at 17.18 which arrives at Piccadilly at 18.20 but you can of course make your own way back earlier/later if you wish (Martin Mere closes at 6pm).

An off-peak return to Burscough Bridge from Manchester is £8.50.

The Martin Mere standard admission price is £12.98. However the website says that if you arrive by public transport or bicycle you can get in with a 15% discount (£9.73). You can also book online for a 10% discount on the standard admission price.

11.30 @ Burscough Bridge railway station if you want to walk there with us.

12.15 @ Martin Mere, Fish Lane, Burscough, Lancashire, L40 0TA.
